Maryland: famous for crabs and the Star Spangled Banner

rest stop

Here is a lovely panorama of I68 in western Maryland and the Appalachian Mountains.

Maryland's Atlantic shore

The Atlantic Coast of Maryland is two barrier islands. Fenwick Island is North and is mostly the summer vacation site Ocean City. The Southern Island is Assateague Island and holds Asateague Island National Seashore. This habitat is protected from development to protect the native wildlife that includes wild horses. The classic children's story of Misty comes from these horses.

Civil War Sites

The battle of Antietam is considered to be the bloodiest day of war in America’s history with over 20,000 casualties.  General Robert E. Lee led the confederate troops against the federal army of General George B. McClellan.  Harpers Ferry is in West Virginia and was important at the beginning of the Civil War.  The Potomac and the Shenandoah rivers meet there in the mountains for some fantastic scenery.
